Contaminants Detected in U.S. Tap Water

The Uncomfortable Truth
The EPA regulates fewer than 100 contaminants. Scientists have identified over 316 in U.S. drinking water. The gap between what is regulated and what is present is where your family's health risk lives.

ACTUAL TAP WATER — UNFILTERED
Electron microscopy, magnified 400x. This is what comes out of your tap.
By the Numbers
Synthetic Fluorinated Compounds
Linked to kidney cancer, thyroid disease, immune suppression, and developmental disorders in children. Detected in 45% of U.S. tap water.
Disinfection Byproducts
Reacts with organic matter to form trihalomethanes (THMs) — classified Group 1 carcinogens by the IARC. Bladder and colorectal cancer risk elevated by 35%.
Inorganic Contaminants
No safe level exists for lead exposure. Causes irreversible neurological damage in children, kidney failure, and cardiovascular disease in adults. Present in 186,000+ U.S. water systems.
Metalloid Toxin
A Group 1 carcinogen. Chronic exposure causes bladder, lung, and skin cancers. The EPA's 'safe' limit of 10 ppb is 500x higher than what toxicologists consider truly safe.
Industrial Chemical Additive
Deliberately added to municipal water. Accumulates in the pineal gland and bone tissue. Associated with reduced IQ in children, thyroid disruption, and skeletal fluorosis.
Agricultural Herbicides
Glyphosate classified as 'probable carcinogen' by WHO. Atrazine is an endocrine disruptor that chemically castrates frogs at 0.1 ppb — found in U.S. water at levels 30x higher.
Emerging Contaminants
Antidepressants, birth control hormones, antibiotics, and chemotherapy drugs pass through wastewater treatment undetected. Found in 80% of U.S. waterways. Zero regulatory limits exist.
Agricultural Runoff
Converts to carcinogenic nitrosamines in the body. Causes 'blue baby syndrome' in infants. Linked to colorectal cancer and thyroid disease. Detected in 1 in 5 U.S. wells.
Industrial Carcinogen
The 'Erin Brockovich chemical.' Causes stomach cancer and is present in the drinking water of 218 million Americans. The EPA has yet to set a legal limit.
Synthetic Polymer Fragments
Found in 94% of U.S. tap water samples. Carry absorbed pesticides, heavy metals, and hormone-disrupting chemicals directly into human tissue. No safe limit established.
There is only one way to eliminate all of this.
The Industry's Dirty Secret
Every filter on the market carries a certification. NSF/ANSI approved. "Removes up to 99% of chlorine." "Reduces lead by 99.6%." The industry has spent decades perfecting the language of safety. What they have not done is show you the data from your actual filter, running at your actual flow rate, in your actual home.
The EBCT Problem
Filter media certifications are granted based on Empty Bed Contact Time (EBCT) — the number of seconds water is in contact with the media under controlled laboratory conditions. Catalytic carbon, for instance, requires a minimum of 4 to 5 minutes of contact time to effectively destroy chloramine — a figure confirmed by the Water Quality Association, Hydronix, and water treatment engineering literature.
A standard "Big Blue" 4.5" × 20" whole-house filter running at 10–15 gallons per minute delivers as little as 5 to 10 seconds of contact time. The same media. A fraction of the required exposure. A certification that is technically accurate and practically meaningless.
The certification does not follow the filter into your home. It stays in the laboratory — and the industry is counting on you never noticing the difference.
The AION Standard
AION systems are engineered with sufficient media volume, optimized flow restriction, and staged contact chambers to guarantee that every contaminant class receives its required EBCT — not in a lab, but at your tap, at your pressure, every time.
And then we do something the rest of the industry refuses to do: we show you the data. Every AION installation includes a third-party laboratory water test taken from your tap, post-installation. Not a marketing claim. Not a certification number. A laboratory report with your address on it.
If the report does not show zero detectable contaminants, we do not consider the installation complete.
Contact Time Comparison — Catalytic Carbon (Chloramine Removal)
Required Contact Time

Big Blue Filter @ 10–15 GPM
5–10 sec
Actual contact time in a standard 4.5" × 20" housing at typical residential flow rate
AION Engineered Contact
4–5+ min
Guaranteed minimum contact time across all AION media stages at rated flow — matching laboratory certification conditions
"Show me a laboratory water test taken from a customer's tap — after installation, at normal household flow rate."
They cannot. Because the certification lives in the lab, and the filter lives in your home — and no one has bothered to check what happens in between. The industry's entire business model depends on you never asking.
The reason water companies make promises but never publish pre- and post-treatment data is simple: the data would not support the promises. Flow rate, contact time, media saturation, and water chemistry all vary by home. A certification number is a single data point taken under conditions that do not exist in your kitchen.
AION was built on the premise that this is unacceptable. We will show you exactly what is in your water before we install. We will show you exactly what remains after. The data is yours. The standard is zero.

The AION Method
Each stage is engineered to destroy or remove a specific class of contamination. Not reduce. Not mitigate. Eliminate.
5 Micron Spun Polypropylene
The first line of defense. A tightly wound 5-micron polypropylene block captures sediment, sand, rust, silt, and suspended particulates before they reach any downstream media — protecting the RO membrane from fouling and extending the life of every stage that follows.
Coconut Shell Activated Carbon Block
High-density coconut shell carbon in block form delivers broad-spectrum adsorption of chlorine, chloramines, VOCs, pesticides, herbicides, taste, and odor compounds. Block construction eliminates channeling and ensures every drop of water makes full contact with the carbon media.
Centaur® Catalytic Activated Carbon
Standard carbon cannot break the chloramine bond. Catalytic carbon — engineered with a modified surface structure — catalytically destroys chloramines, PFAS precursors, and disinfection byproducts that survive conventional carbon treatment. A second carbon stage ensures belt-and-suspenders protection before water reaches the RO membrane.
High-Rejection Thin-Film Composite RO
The core elimination stage. A high-rejection thin-film composite membrane achieves 95–99% removal of TDS, heavy metals, arsenic, fluoride, nitrates, chromium-6, pharmaceuticals, and dissolved salts. Dual carbon pretreatment protects the membrane from chlorine degradation, extending its service life significantly beyond industry norms.
Mixed-Bed Nuclear-Grade Ion Exchange Resin
Mixed-bed ion exchange resin polishes water to near-ultrapure quality by capturing residual cations and anions that pass through the RO membrane. Output targets below 1–5 ppm TDS — the threshold used in laboratory, pharmaceutical, and semiconductor-grade water systems. This is the stage that separates 'very clean' from 'the world's cleanest.'
Natural Calcite (Omnipure Inline Cartridge)
Ultrapure water is flat, slightly acidic, and stripped of all minerals. Natural calcite media slowly dissolves into the water stream, reintroducing calcium carbonate and gently raising pH to 7.0–8.0 for balanced taste and improved cellular absorption. Early AION buyers will receive a complimentary upgrade to our custom mineral blend when it launches.
Nano-Ceramic Carbon Composite Block
The final and defining stage. A nano-ceramic carbon composite block provides sub-micron mechanical filtration combined with adsorptive carbon polishing — capturing any trace organics, particulates, or biofilm that could form downstream of the RO and DI stages. This stage is the primary reason AION outperforms filter systems that stop at RO or DI alone.

What's Included When You Join

The AION Standard
AION's seven-stage architecture combines catalytic carbon, a 0.001–0.01 micron nano-ceramic membrane, high-rejection reverse osmosis, and mixed-bed deionization — targeting output below 5 TDS, the standard used in laboratory and pharmaceutical-grade water systems.
The nano-ceramic membrane is backwashable, regenerable, and rated for 5–10+ years of service — extending RO membrane life by 2–5x compared to conventional pretreatment. Stage 6 remineralization then restores calcium, magnesium, and trace minerals at naturally balanced ratios, raising pH to 7–8.5. Stage 7 UV sterilization at 254nm provides the final, absolute microbial kill — NSF/ANSI 55 certified.
Every AION system ships with a third-party laboratory water quality report. We do not ask you to trust our marketing. We give you the data.

What Our Clients Say
“I had our water tested before and after installation. The before report was alarming — PFAS, chloramines, trace pharmaceuticals. The after report showed zero detectable contaminants. Zero. That's not marketing. That's a laboratory result.”
Michael R.
Dallas, TX · Whole House System
“We've had three children since installing the AION under-sink system. Knowing that the water they drink every day is genuinely pure — not 'reduced' but eliminated — is worth every dollar. I sleep better.”
Sarah K.
Denver, CO · Under Sink 7-Stage
“I'm a physician. I've been recommending AION to patients with autoimmune conditions and chemical sensitivities for two years. The clinical difference in their symptoms has been notable. Clean water is not a luxury. It's medicine.”

Choose Your Level of Protection
10 min shower
Your skin absorbs more chlorine and chloramine in a single 10-minute shower than from drinking 2 liters of tap water. Steam inhalation delivers contaminants directly into your lungs and bloodstream — bypassing digestion entirely.
3× more absorbed
Children's skin is 3× more permeable than adult skin. A 20-minute bath exposes a child to chlorine, chloramine, trihalomethanes, and VOCs through every square inch of their body. Under-sink filtration does not protect bathwater.
Chlorine residue
Chlorine and chloramine in wash water react with organic compounds in fabric to form chlorinated byproducts. These residues remain in clothing and bedding — in direct contact with skin for hours every day, including your children's pajamas.
Concentrates toxins
Boiling tap water does not remove PFAS, heavy metals, nitrates, or pharmaceutical residues — it concentrates them. Every pot of pasta, every cup of tea, every steamed vegetable prepared with unfiltered water delivers a concentrated dose of contaminants.

Our Mission
AION was founded on a single conviction: the standard is not good enough. Every day, millions of families drink water that contains known carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and industrial chemicals — all within "legal limits" that haven't been updated in decades.
We are not in the business of making contaminated water slightly less contaminated. We are in the business of total elimination. Our systems do not reduce. They destroy. They remove. They protect — completely.
