Filtration Architecture
5 Micron Spun Polypropylene
The first line of defense. A tightly wound 5-micron polypropylene block captures sediment, sand, rust, silt, and suspended particulates before they reach any downstream media — protecting the RO membrane from fouling and extending the life of every stage that follows.
Coconut Shell Activated Carbon Block
High-density coconut shell carbon in block form delivers broad-spectrum adsorption of chlorine, chloramines, VOCs, pesticides, herbicides, taste, and odor compounds. Block construction eliminates channeling and ensures every drop of water makes full contact with the carbon media.
Centaur® Catalytic Activated Carbon
Standard carbon cannot break the chloramine bond. Catalytic carbon — engineered with a modified surface structure — catalytically destroys chloramines, PFAS precursors, and disinfection byproducts that survive conventional carbon treatment. A second carbon stage ensures belt-and-suspenders protection before water reaches the RO membrane.
High-Rejection Thin-Film Composite RO
The core elimination stage. A high-rejection thin-film composite membrane achieves 95–99% removal of TDS, heavy metals, arsenic, fluoride, nitrates, chromium-6, pharmaceuticals, and dissolved salts. Dual carbon pretreatment protects the membrane from chlorine degradation, extending its service life significantly beyond industry norms.
Mixed-Bed Nuclear-Grade Ion Exchange Resin
Mixed-bed ion exchange resin polishes water to near-ultrapure quality by capturing residual cations and anions that pass through the RO membrane. Output targets below 1–5 ppm TDS — the threshold used in laboratory, pharmaceutical, and semiconductor-grade water systems. This is the stage that separates 'very clean' from 'the world's cleanest.'
Natural Calcite (Omnipure Inline Cartridge)
Ultrapure water is flat, slightly acidic, and stripped of all minerals. Natural calcite media slowly dissolves into the water stream, reintroducing calcium carbonate and gently raising pH to 7.0–8.0 for balanced taste and improved cellular absorption. Early AION buyers will receive a complimentary upgrade to our custom mineral blend when it launches.
Nano-Ceramic Carbon Composite Block
The final and defining stage. A nano-ceramic carbon composite block provides sub-micron mechanical filtration combined with adsorptive carbon polishing — capturing any trace organics, particulates, or biofilm that could form downstream of the RO and DI stages. This stage is the primary reason AION outperforms filter systems that stop at RO or DI alone.
Technical Specifications
NSF/ANSI Certification — In Progress
AION systems are currently undergoing third-party NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58, and 401 certification testing. Results are expected in Q3 2025. In the meantime, all performance claims are based on the certified specifications of the individual filter media used in each stage. We will update this page as certifications are issued.
HOW WE COMPARE
Most filters are certified to reduce a percentage of a contaminant under ideal laboratory conditions. AION is engineered to eliminate. The difference is not marketing — it is architecture.
| CONTAMINANT / CATEGORY | BRITA PITCHER | BERKEY SYSTEM | RORRA | AION 7-STAGE |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Chlorine & Chloramine Primary disinfectants — form carcinogenic byproducts (THMs, HAAs) | Chlorine/taste (NSF 42); chloramine not NSF-certified | Chlorine addressed via carbon; chloramine not certified | Nanofiber filter addresses chlorine (NSF 42); chloramine not certified | Dual carbon destruction — activated + catalytic carbon in series |
PFAS / Forever Chemicals Detected in 45% of U.S. tap water; linked to cancer and immune suppression | Elite filter: PFOA/PFOS only (NSF 53); Standard filter: not rated | No PFAS certification; Black Berkey off US market (EPA stop-sale 2023) | NSF 53 certified — 99.58% PFAS removal; single nanofiber filter | Catalytic carbon pre-treatment + high-rejection RO membrane |
Lead & Heavy Metals Arsenic, cadmium, mercury, chromium-6 — no safe exposure level | Lead only (NSF 53); arsenic and other metals not addressed | Lead addressed; arsenic/chromium-6 not NSF-certified | Lead NSF 53 certified; no RO or DI — other dissolved metals remain | RO + mixed-bed DI — dissolved metals captured to below 5 ppm TDS |
Fluoride Added to municipal water; accumulates in bone and pineal tissue | Does not address fluoride | Does not address fluoride (requires separate add-on purchase) | No RO membrane — fluoride passes through nanofiber filter | High-rejection RO + DI — near-complete fluoride elimination |
